Although home remedies aren’t a substitute for your doctor’s care they can be pretty effective in dealing with conditions that aren’t too serious. Why would you want to test thousands of chemical products on your skin that could cause serious damage in the long run? There are several remedies that you could conjure up in your own kitchen or backyard.

Potatoes:
Potatoes not only help in preventing acne but they also help reduce scarring that occurs due to wounds from acne. You will need to apply potato slices on the affected areas at least twice a day for four to seven days. Start by slicing the potato and applying it to your face, after you’ve washed both your face and the potato. Massage the slice on the affected area but make sure you use different slices for different areas of the face. This will prevent the spread of bacteria. The acid from the potato will also kill the bacteria. Place fresh slices on the acne again and leave it there for 5 to 10 minutes.

Aloe Vera:
It is probably the best treatment you can give your skin. However it isn’t very effective on its own for fighting acne. Neem soaps, pastes need to be mixed along with the aloe vera gel. It is also very useful for cuts, scrapes and minor burns as it stimulates the healing of broken skin.

Fuller’s Earth or Multani Mitti:
This clay has been used since the time of our ancestors. It removes pimples, deal cells and functions as an exfoliating agent. It is very effective when used with rose water. You can also make a face pack using sandalwood, honey, oatmeal and rose water. Use a pinch of turmeric as well in the mixture and apply the face pack for around 30 minutes. Use a clean towel to wipe your face and make sure you don’t scratch your pimples. Multani mitti can also be mixed with carrot pulp, beaten eggs lemon juice or neem.

Grapes:
You can use grapes to get rid of your pimples as well. You can mash up a few grapes into a paste and apply it on your face or slice a few grapes and place them over the acne.

Tomatoes:
Eating raw tomatoes can reduce your chances of getting acne. You can even drink tomato juice or apply the paste to your face. You can gently massage your face with the tomato skin, wash it after 10 to 15 minutes and then apply a thin layer of curd for another 10 minutes.

Honey:
Honey helps keep your skin smooth and blemish free. You can use dry roast cinnamon along with honey for better results.

Tulsi:
Tulsi (Indian Basil) can work wonders for skin that is prone to pimples and acne breakouts. You can use fresh leaves or dried leaves. Tulsi is used to treat many skin and health problems. It has powerful antibacterial and antiviral properties. It helps in healing acne lesions. It will not only clear up acne and blemishes but it will also make your skin complexion brighter and smoother.

Baking soda:
Sodium bicarbonate helps clear out your pores and remove dead skin. It has mild inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Mix together two teaspoons of baking powder, along with cinnamon powder, half a lemon and three tablespoons of honey. Apply the paste for five minutes and then wash it off.

Tea tree oil:
Apply one drop of tea tree oil to the affected area three times a day. It helps kill the bacteria that cause acne.

Orange peel:
It is acidic in nature and contains vitamin C. You can use the juice from the orange but the peel is usually more effective. Leave the orange peel to dry out completely under the sun. Once is it completely dry, grind it into a powder and make a paste with some water. You can apply the paste for a period of 5 to 10 minutes.

Fenugreek:
It can be used to treat acne because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties. Mix fresh fenugreek with water. Apply the paste to your on the affected area for 15 minutes and then wash your face with warm water. Repeat this process for three to four days until the acne completely clears out.

Healthy diet:
Avoid oily, fatty foods and excessive intake of dairy products. These can cause a severe outbreak of acne. No matter what you use to prevent or cure acne, a healthy, nutritious diet play a very important role in the wellbeing of your skin.

These remedies are tried and tested and have helped many people rejuvenate their skin and clear acne, dark spots etc. It is advisable to try these out for problems that are small enough to avoid going to the doctor for.
